Adult Snorkeling
I'm going on a family vacation on Carnival Valor: Isla Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya & Grand Caymen. Thoughts?
In February, six of us, plus 2 other families. Six adults and 8 kids (aged 11-15). Any helpful hints onboard ship, at the ports of call, or anything else? Where does the ship stop in Belize? Which of these ports use tenders to shore? Any recommendations for family/beach/snorkeling loving folks? Thanks!
I can tell you about Roatan, though I've never been on a cruise, only visited the island.
When you get off the boat in Roatan, you will be in Coxen Hole. You will come off the dock and there will be barkers trying to get you to go to different places. I recommend going to West Bay, but don't do any deals involving $75 a hamburger and a beach chair. Just get a taxi to the Mayan Princess on West Bay. That is the best beach on the island right now, and will place you right in the heart of the action. If you want to hang out there you can get a day pass to use their pool for $10.00 and hang out at their cabana bar. I recommend though that you walk the beach until you find Infinity Bay condos. They are not built yet, but the sales office is up, and there is an awesome bar in front of it run by some ex-pats from Chicago. They will take good care of you if you want to party.
If SCUBA is your thing, then you should still go to West Bay, but this time go to a resort called Bananarama. They have very reasonable prices on dives and go out in the afternoon. Be sure to tell them that you are on a cruise ship though as your boat will not be allowed to stay overnight at Roatan and you'll want to be sure you get back in time.
If you just want to snorkel, then turn up at West Bay and knock yourself out! Just don't stand on the reef no matter how shallow it gets... you'll hurt the reef with every step, and to ruin something as great as the reef there would be a shame.
