Should I worry about the accuracy of rainfall measurements due to a loss from evaporation?
I am a member of CoCoRaHS, a volunteer rain, hail, & snow observing network. My four inch cylindrical rain gauge measures to the hundredth of an inch. Daily reports cover a 24 hour period ending at 7:00 AM. This will be my first Summer of reporting rainfall. I have not tested this theory but suspect that hot, dry, or even windy days will evaporate collected water and reduce the true depth of rain that fell if allowed to sit in the gauge until the following morning.
Some rain gauges are self-emptying at regular intervals and if you don't have that kind of device, then maybe you should. That would offset much of the evaporation that you experience. Even so, I don't think that evaporation would be all that much. Additionally you are going to have to experiment. See how your sites measure up against sites in your area.
As a weather observer there were many tricks to verifying the accuracy of cloud bases and heights. So comparing is only practica Again practice makes perfect or close as you can get anyway so just try to find others who do the same thing and get their experiences.
I was a weather observer before I became a meteorologist, so I understand quite a bit on this topic and hope I have helped.
