How do I reduce the noise in a cb radio?

I have a cobra 21 LTD WX classic radio hooked up to a 4 foot whip in my 96 ranger. The radio is usually silent as far as noise goes until I pass a certain house nearby, A grain elevator, and a 2 mile stretch of road outside a town. The only thing I can figure is something to do with the power lines overhead. When I pass by them, the noise jumps up to the point I have to turn the squelch up 3/4 to the right. I know it isn't engine related because it doesn't so it all the time the truck is running. What would make the radio do this? My dad has the same problem in the same areas as me in his F550. I don't know his radio model but he also has 4 foot whips. Neither have been tuned with a SWR meter, would that be the problem?

to answer your question on interference in certain areas you will get that in any town and any place. radio waves are electromagnetic and can be interfered by any other electromagnetic signal, power lines,etc. swr does not effect receive ONLY transmit. swr stands for standing wave ratio. it its the power that is reflected back to the radio. a high swr will effete radio transmit performance big time. in my opinion anything over 1.5 is bad news. but yes get your swr checked. you can do it your self. now back to your interference problem you can 1 live with it and dont drive around that area or 2 try a rf choke. and last but not least power line interference only gets worse when it snows or rains and soaks the inside of a transformer.
