What are the best shaped fins for a bottle rocket?
im making a 2 liter bottle rocket but im not sure on what shape to make them, it needs to be made so it will go as high as possible
cut out a profile of your bottle from cardboard. A shark fin shape is very efficient for aero-dynamic fins. Put cutouts on you profile and find the center of gravity by balancing the profile on a pencil across the profile's narrow section of the bottle shape. Attach a wire handle there. Let a fan run over the profile with the fins. If it turns into the wind, it will be stable in flight. Rough rule of thumb: the center of pressure (found with the fan) should be below the center of gravity (found by balancing the profile.)
Next rule of thumb, the fins should be the smallest that will stabilize the rocket. After all, the lighter the rocket, the higher it will fly.
Finally, neck down the bottles neck. This will increase the velocity of the water leaving the bottle and will increase trust and give longer thrust. Experiment with different inside diameters. I find something that cuts the diameter by 1/4 inch will give you the edge. Modeling clay works well to fashion a nozzle if you have small fingers to work it into place.
